Introducing World Farmers Markets Coalition

In July 2021, Farmers Market Associations from around the world were asked to support the formation of the World Farmers Markets Coalition. They heartily agreed and were subsequently asked to join Fondazione Campagna Amica to launch the World Farmers Markets Coalition with UN Deputy General Amina Mohammed in Rome at the flagship Circo Massimo farmers market, part of the Fondazione Campagna Amica network. Ghana, Georgia, Norway, Denmark, Canada, USA and, of course, Italy! What an honor to represent our countries and associations on such a noble mission. The UN has set “Zero Hunger” as one of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. We believe that farmers markets are a means to achieving that goal. We are inspired by our new friends from across the globe and by such hospitality from our hosts in Italy. In the words of our Secretary General Carmelo Troccoli: “We have no leaders, we are all leaders.” With this, we move forward in supporting and building farmers markets around the world.

A new training session for farmers and FM managers is taking place for the establishment of the first farmers’ market in Alexandria, Egypt. The MaMi project aims, starting from this first market, to create a network of farmers’ markets in Egypt. The coordinator in Egypt for the WFMC is the deputy director of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Eman Seif, who has been following the project from the beginning. Present in Alexandria are Richard McCarthy and Robin Moon, while representing the Fondazione Campagna Amica is Giuseppe Stocchi.

MAMi – Farmers Markets project, is an initiative financed by the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale and implemented by CIHEAMBari in collaboration with the World Farmers Markets Coalition and promoted by Coldiretti through the Fondazione Campagna Amica. It aims to provide technical support and capacity building for the development of new farmers markets as effective levers to revitalize rural communities, improve livelihoods for family farming and enhance the role of multifunctional agriculture in generating economic, social, and ecological benefits.
Farmers’ markets are the place to connect cities Farmers’ markets are the place to connect cities with the countryside, the place where farmers meet citizens.
