Introducing World Farmers Markets Coalition

In July 2021, Farmers Market Associations from around the world were asked to support the formation of the World Farmers Markets Coalition. They heartily agreed and were subsequently asked to join Fondazione Campagna Amica to launch the World Farmers Markets Coalition with UN Deputy General Amina Mohammed in Rome at the flagship Circo Massimo farmers market, part of the Fondazione Campagna Amica network. Ghana, Georgia, Norway, Denmark, Canada, USA and, of course, Italy! What an honor to represent our countries and associations on such a noble mission. The UN has set “Zero Hunger” as one of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. We believe that farmers markets are a means to achieving that goal. We are inspired by our new friends from across the globe and by such hospitality from our hosts in Italy. In the words of our Secretary General Carmelo Troccoli: “We have no leaders, we are all leaders.” With this, we move forward in supporting and building farmers markets around the world.

Congratulations to @martinamaurizio in his appoint Congratulations to @martinamaurizio in his appointment this week as FAO Deputy Director-General by FAO Director-General @qudongyufaodg ! Previously in his role as the Assistant Director General/Senior Advisor to the Director General, Martina was the first supporter of the WorldFMC. We are grateful for his support from the very beginning and are thrilled that he will continue to be an integral partner in growing local food systems globally.

Qu shared how Martina “does more and says less" - and we could not agree more. Less talk and more action, this is why we believe in #farmersmarkets

A huge thank you to @ciheam_bari for making this great event happen. We loved having the chance to connect and discuss the value of fishers and farmers markets. Also, thank you to the #worldfmc members, who presented their experiences during the event @slowfoodmelbournefm @organicfarmersmarket @fondazionecampagnamica @marketfreshns LSU Ag Center @annamarieseafood

"Where there is a @fondazionecampagnamica farmers market with a fisher who sells fresh fish, they have 20% more consumers attend than in those where there isn't a fisher. This is because farmers markets create relationships based on trust between fishers and consumers. Consumers want to know about what they purchase when they buy fresh fish and to be directly in contact with the person who fishes everyday. With farmers markets, we can start to move towards local food systems." - Carmelo Troccoli, Director General of @fondazionecampagnamica & #worldfmc

"Fishers are the hidden secret weapons of successful farmers markets. From several discussions with farmers market managers, we've heard a consistent remark... don't put the fishers at the front of the market, as the shopper will arrive, buy the fish, and then leave. Better to put the fisher farther from the entrance, so as to encourage consumers to stay at the market longer!" - Richard McCarthy, President of #worldfmc

Finally, a key takeaway from the day, "The goal is to catch fewer fish and add more value to the fish. Farmers markets give more value to the catch AND they provide space for building trust between fishers and consumers. If we catch less, there is also much less impact on the environmnet. This is a best practice we hope to share and grow around the world." --Orazio Albano, CIHEAM Bari

This is just the beginning! We already can't wait until next year 🐠🎣

At the 21st International Agriculture and Food For At the 21st International Agriculture and Food Forum at Villa Miani organized by @coldiretti this week, we are thrilled to share that farmers markets took center stage. A few takeaways from one panel dedicated to the topic:

Samia Nkrumah, President, Partito della Convenzione del Popolo, Ghana, emphasized the inherent value of traditional knowledge and highlighted the role that farmers markets play in creating a space for it.

@martinamaurizio Deputy Director of @fao emphasized that although farmers markets may appear to be small, nostalgia-driven projects, they are, in reality, significant endeavors with a future-oriented impact on reshaping our food systems. This is the reason @FAO is actively investing in capacity-building projects.

"Today, farmers markets are drivers of change, growth, and interaction. They are the first step toward redesigning local food systems. Managed markets rebuild social trust and transform consumers into protagonists and farmers into innovators." @mcpirate #WorldFMC President
