Citizens & Communities for European Right to Quality and Local Food

The CICERO Project promotes more conscious and responsible food consumption across Europe, while supporting the objectives of the EU’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme. The initiative empowers citizens to take an active role as consumers, encouraging them to choose local, sustainable, and ethically produced food. Although the project is not led by the World Farmers Markets Coalition, all participating organisations are proud members of our network, reflecting our shared commitment to strengthening local food systems and supporting small-scale producers.

Purpose of the Project

CICERO aims to:

  • Encourage citizens to make informed food choices
  • Promote the consumption of local and sustainable products
  • Foster a fairer and more conscious food marketplace
  • Support farmers using environmentally respectful practices
  • Strengthen food security and food democracy across the EU

By promoting direct sales of agricultural products and highlighting the value of local food economies, the project helps build a more ethical and resilient European food system

A Europe-wide Initiative

The project is carried out through five events in five European countries, each hosted by a different partner organisation, all of which are members, and some founding members of the World Farmers Markets Coalition:

  • Italy – Fondazione Campagna Amica
  • Netherlands – Stichting Rotterdamse Oogst
  • Poland – Fundacja Targ Pietruszkowy
  • Croatia – Association of Croatian Markets
  • Denmark – Grønt Marked

Each event explores key themes related to the direct sale of farm products: public health, biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, social responsibility, and the creation of an ethical local economy.
