Yesterday, WorldFMC participated in the fifty-firs Yesterday, WorldFMC participated in the fifty-first plenary session of the Committee on World Food Security held at @fao in Rome!

During the side event titled "Our Seat at the Table: Maximizing Transformative Opportunities across the Rural-Urban Continuum to Deliver Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems" our president @mcpirate joined an impressive group of speakers including, Corinna Hawkes, Director, Food Systems and Food Safety Division, Manuel de Arujo, Mayor of Quelimane, Mozambique, Mohamed Sefiani, Mayor of Chefchaouen, Morocco, Charlie Worthington, Food Systems Lead, Consumers International, and Stineke Onemu, UN-Nutrition.

During this important conference on food security, he had the chance to share the role and value of promoting the farmers markets:

"Markets are platforms to formalize what is often informal activity, to elevate the dignity of farmers. [...] You can really cultivate behavior change ... there is the opportunity to launch programs that need not be huge but they can be food security programs, interventions that are very targeted. We have seen an incredible rise in farmers market nutrition programs [...] Places where multi-class, multi-neighborhood, regional expressions of an excitement for local food becomes a centerpiece, but underneath there are structural things to do to mitigate the risk for vulnerable consumers to eat more fresh, local products and for farmers to redirect their enterprises towards greater biodiversity and local consumption." - Richard McCarthy

We hosted our "Farmers Market Mapping - Part 1" Ac We hosted our "Farmers Market Mapping - Part 1" Academy Studio today and found ourselves in a fascinating conversation with members and friends from all over the world. A huge thanks to HealthBridge Foundation of Canada and their partners (especially Kristie Daniel, Furaha Abwe, Boney Sensasi, Phaeba Thomas, and George MP!) for their support in this studio.

We discussed the value of mapping markets - how it provides a better visual understanding of food / market access within a city and can help policy makers better recognize them as assets to communities. It shows not only where markets are and food is needed, but also other needs for people to reach markets such as transportation. Kristie and her team shared concrete tools with us as well as some case studies with us in places like India, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam.

We loved all of your questions and can't wait for the next studio - November 21st (mark your calendars!) - remember our studios are free and open to the public. More details soon.

Don’t forget… tomorrow is our next #WorldFMC A Don’t forget… tomorrow is our next #WorldFMC Academy Studio -“Farmers Markets Mapping,” Part I - October 24th at 1pm CET and 6pm CET (Rome Time!).

Understanding your local area’s food environment is key in determining whether or not your community is able to eat sufficiently and healthfully. One great way to do it is to map physical access to food, and in our case specifically, to farmers markets. Putting your farmers markets on a map empowers you, your local residents and stakeholders with data to advocate for positive change.

Come and learn about what farmers markets mapping is, how this work done in Africa and Asia has helped improve their communities! You’ll be joined by Kristie Daniel from Canada, Boney Sensasi from Uganda, Furaha Abwe from Tanzania, George Mankidiyan Porinchu from India, and Phoebe Abraham from India.

💻 *REGISTER* to join the virtual conversation via the link in our bio! There are two sessions to accommodate the range of time zones in our global community - choose the one that best fits your schedule.
