Director General’s Message – Why Defining a Farmers Market Matters More Than Ever

Farmers markets are popping up everywhere, from bustling city squares to suburban parking lots. They’ve become symbols of local food, fresh produce, and community connections. But here’s the question: What exactly is a farmers market? And why does that definition matter?

More Than Just a Market

At first glance, a farmers market seems straightforward—a place where farmers sell their goods directly to consumers. But it’s much more than that. Farmers markets are an opportunity to develop sustainable, local food systems. They connect growers with eaters, cities with their rural roots, and consumers with the source of their nourishment.

But as the popularity of farmers markets grows, so does the confusion around what they are. In some places, the term “farmers market” is used for events or spaces that have little to do with farmers or farming. Without farmers actively involved, is it still a farmers market?

The Case for a Clear Definition

Imagine walking into a so-called farmers market, only to find that it’s filled with vendors selling imported goods and pre-packaged snacks. No local farmers. No fresh produce. Just the idea of a farmers market.

This dilution of the concept raises important questions:

  • Are we losing the essence of what farmers markets are supposed to represent?
  • Shouldn’t these spaces reflect the dignity and hard work of farmers?
  • How can we ensure that farmers markets remain true to their purpose?

Without a clear definition, we risk losing the authenticity of farmers markets. Worse, farmers themselves may be excluded from spaces that should be designed to support their livelihoods.

Sparking a Global Debate

Defining what a farmers market is isn’t just about semantics; it’s about setting standards. A shared definition could:

  • Empower local and international institutions to protect and promote genuine farmers markets.
  • Ensure that these markets provide fair opportunities for farmers.
  • Help consumers recognize and support authentic farmers markets.

Right now, no universal definition exists. There are examples of what farmers markets can be, vibrant hubs of local food, community, and culture but no standard framework.
