The World Farmers Markets Coalition is hosting the Second General Assembly Meeting in Rome, Italy, from July 12-13, 2024.

Over 100 leaders in agriculture and community development from across the globe will meet in Rome to share a global farmers market community of practice. The gathering aims to foster the development of a sustainable local food system model that bridges the gap between rural and urban areas while empowering local economies, public healthcare, and biodiversity.

“Herein lies the challenge to gather. Each of our organizations is driven by different missions, different settings, and different levels of food system health. However, what we share is a commitment to direct marketing as a step towards reviving local food system health and cultivating other forms of health. It is how we facilitate this form of shared direct marketing that makes our strategy important to achieving the social good of gathering different people in shared spaces: old, young, urban, rural, buyer, and seller,” according to our president, Richard McCarthy.

The event will feature contributions from high-level representatives of Rome-based United Nations (UN) agencies, with several panel discussions centered on strengthening local food systems worldwide. These discussions will include topics such as:

  • Fostering biodiversity and family farming
  • How houses of worship can practically support farmers market
  • The economic impact of farmers markets and their role in creating innovation, communities, and fraternity places
