The World Farmers Markets Coalition is hosting the Second General Assembly Meeting in Rome, Italy, from July 12-13, 2024.

Over 100 leaders in agriculture and community development from across the globe will meet in Rome to share a global farmers market community of practice. The gathering aims to foster the development of a sustainable local food system model that bridges the gap between rural and urban areas while empowering local economies, public healthcare, and biodiversity.

“Herein lies the challenge to gather. Each of our organizations is driven by different missions, different settings, and different levels of food system health. However, what we share is a commitment to direct marketing as a step towards reviving local food system health and cultivating other forms of health. It is how we facilitate this form of shared direct marketing that makes our strategy important to achieving the social good of gathering different people in shared spaces: old, young, urban, rural, buyer, and seller,” according to our president, Richard McCarthy.

The event will feature contributions from high-level representatives of Rome-based United Nations (UN) agencies, with several panel discussions centered on strengthening local food systems worldwide. These discussions will include topics such as:

  • Fostering biodiversity and family farming
  • How houses of worship can practically support farmers market
  • The economic impact of farmers markets and their role in creating innovation, communities, and fraternity places

WorldFMC is a Rome-based non-profit organization, launched in July 2021 and officially recognized as an international association in June 2022. It represents over 70 associations from more than 60 countries, encompassing 20,000 markets, 200,000 farming families, and over 300 million consumers.

The WorldFMC is one of 10 FAO programs selected within the Food Coalition Project, a collaborative initiative started by Fondazione Campagna Amica & Coldiretti (Italy), the Stiftelsen Bondens Marked Norge Foundation (Norway), and Grønt Marked (Denmark). Its mission is to affirm the role of farmers markets in developing local food systems. The coalition is dedicated to cultivating a global community of farmers markets, sharing good practices and innovations, defending endangered markets and their participants, and promoting the idea that farmers markets can serve as bridges to create meaningful opportunities to build social trust, especially when it is lacking. The WorldFMC aims to be the crucial voice for producers and communities who facilitate, work in, and benefit from farmers markets, creating sustainable, healthy, and economically vibrant environments.
