A New Farmers Market Opens in Alexandria, Egypt: Growing Communities, One Market at a Time

The World Farmers Markets Coalition (WorldFMC) is proud to celebrate another important milestone in Egypt: the opening of a new farmers’ market in Alexandria. This achievement is more than the launch of a new marketplace, it is the result of a journey that began with the Mediterranean and African Markets Initiative (MAMi), which laid the foundations for the development of farmers markets in the country.

As one of the project’s final milestones, Alexandria Farmers Markets was established and officially opened in October 2024 under the leadership of Eman Seif, Deputy Secretary General at Alexandria chamber of commerce and her dedicated team. What started as a phase of the MAMi project quickly became something much bigger. Week after week, the market continued to grow, attracting new farmers, vendors, and customers while proving the value of farmers markets as vibrant spaces that connect local producers with their communities.

Less than two years later, that commitment has led to another exciting achievement: the opening of a second farmers market in Zizinya, one of Alexandria’s historic and upscale neighbourhoods. Operating every Monday, the new market gives local residents regular access to fresh, genuine, and locally produced food while supporting small-scale producers and strengthening the local economy.

“Opening the second branch of Alexandria Farmers Markets is an important milestone because it gives more people easier access to fresh, locally produced food. At the same time, it supports local farmers, creates new economic opportunities, and contributes to the growth of the local economy,” said Eman Seif. “We are proud to see this initiative continue to grow and serve even more communities across Alexandria.”

The market launched with 14 vendors, including women entrepreneurs managing their own stalls. Visitors can choose from a diverse selection of products, including fresh vegetables, honey, baked goods, poultry, meat, cheese, eggs, and milk, offering families the opportunity to enjoy nutritious food while discovering the true flavours of their region.

Designed with the whole community in mind, the market goes beyond food. Families with young children can enjoy a dedicated kids’ area, allowing parents to shop while children play in a safe environment. A health corner also provides free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, reinforcing the market’s role in promoting healthier lifestyles and community well-being.

WorldFMC Director General Carmelo Troccoli said: “At WorldFMC, moments like these are especially meaningful. Seeing our members expand their vision, respond to the needs of their communities, and create new opportunities for farmers and consumers alike is exactly what our global network strives to achieve.” He then concluded: “Every new market represents stronger local food systems, greater economic opportunities for producers, and more vibrant, connected communities.”

The new Zizinya market is a powerful example of resilience and continuous improvement. It shows what can happen when dedicated local leaders keep building, learning, and growing. More than a place to buy food, it is a welcoming community space where local agriculture is celebrated, families come together, and healthy, sustainable choices become part of everyday life.

Congratulations to Eman Seif, the Alexandria Farmers Markets team, and every farmer, vendor, partner, and volunteer who made this achievement possible. We look forward to seeing this new market flourish and inspire many more initiatives across Egypt and beyond.
