Bridging the Digital Gap: The Erasmus+ Project for Farmers and Markets

The Erasmus+ project, funded by the European Commission, has brought together a strong partnership to support farmers and market operators across Europe. Led by the World Farmers Markets Coalition, with partners TABILIA (Italy), Udruga Hrvatskih Tržnica (Croatia), and Xarxa de Consum Solidari (Barcelona), the project set out with a clear mission: to reduce the digital divide among farmers, equip them with new professional skills to strengthen their competitiveness, and contribute to building a more resilient and sustainable food system. At the same time, it aims to raise awareness of the opportunities offered by the European Union and the Erasmus+ Programme.

The project unfolded through three main activities:

  1. Co-design and validation of the asynchronous platform – developed with direct input from farmers and market operators.
  2. Creation and sharing of tailored content – based on the specific needs identified during the needs assessment phase.
  3. Testing, dissemination, and diffusion of results – ensuring the knowledge gained reaches a wide community of beneficiaries.

As part of the third and final stage, the consortium gathered in Barcelona, where Xarxa de Consum Solidari hosted the project’s closing event.

It was an inspiring day, offering the opportunity to share the project’s main findings, and to engage directly with local food systems. Participants visited the Germanetes Farmers’ Market, meeting with market producers and managers. The day concluded with a shared lunch at Espai Mescladís, a social enterprise that combines food, culture, and community. By promoting social inclusion, sustainable gastronomy, and the right to migrate, Espai Mescladís provided the perfect setting to close the project and reflect on the values it promotes.
