A testimonial from Eman Seif, Deputy Secretary General of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.
A few months ago, Alexandria, Egypt, witnessed the launch of its first-ever farmers market. This landmark initiative, part of the Mediterranean and African Markets Initiative (MAMI-Farmers Markets) project, marked the beginning of a broader vision to establish a network of farmers markets across the Mediterranean and Africa. The project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and implemented by CIHEAM Bari, aims to strengthen ties between local farmers and consumers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Now, several months after its launch, the Alexandria farmers market has seen remarkable growth and success. What started with 18 farmers has now expanded to include 21, introducing an even greater variety of high-quality, local products. Among the newest additions to the market’s offerings are ornamental plants, organic vegetables, and fresh organic eggs. This expansion reflects the market’s growing popularity and the increasing demand for fresh, locally sourced goods.
Expanding Beyond Just a Marketplace
The MAMI project is more than just a trading space; it is a hub for education, community engagement, and sustainable food consumption. Since its opening, the market has hosted a series of engaging activities, including lectures on organic fertilizers, live vegetable slicing demonstrations, and festive events such as the children’s festival during the holiday season and a special Ramadan celebration. These events have fostered a sense of community and strengthened the bond between farmers and consumers, making the market a cultural and social hub in addition to a place for fresh produce.
One of the standout initiatives has been the introduction of home delivery services, which has made fresh, locally sourced products even more accessible to residents. The market has also introduced healthy food options, including fresh sandwiches and balanced meals, promoting better eating habits among the local population.
Customer Feedback: A Testament to Success
The success of the Alexandria farmers market is perhaps best reflected in the words of its customers. A visitor shared their positive experience, stating, “I learned about the market because I was at a nearby government institution during my stay on Thursday. I found the prices to be very good, the products fresh, and the treatment by the staff and vendors excellent. The prices caught my attention because they are lower than those in external markets, with a noticeable difference in meat, vegetables, and all my purchases.”
This feedback highlights the market’s key advantages: affordability, quality, and excellent customer service. By providing fresh produce at competitive prices, the market is not only benefiting local farmers but also easing the financial burden on consumers.
Looking Ahead: A Model for Future Growth
The Alexandria farmers market is setting the stage for the broader expansion of the MAMI project across Egypt and beyond. With the backing of Italian expertise and a strong commitment to sustainability, the project envisions replicating this success in other governorates and countries such as Tunisia, Kenya, and Lebanon.
The continued support from local authorities, international organizations, and, most importantly, the community, will be crucial in maintaining and expanding this initiative. As Alexandria’s market continues to thrive, it stands as a model of how local markets can empower farmers, create economic opportunities, and provide consumers with healthy, sustainable food choices.
The MAMI project has made significant strides in a short period, and with its ongoing commitment to sustainability, education, and community development, it is poised to leave a lasting impact on the agricultural and food sectors in Egypt and beyond.
An important milestone in this journey is that both Egypt and Kenya are now working towards opening their second farmers markets under the MAMI flag. This expansion further strengthens the project’s vision of fostering sustainable agricultural economies and direct farmer-to-consumer connections.
