Farmers markets are more than just places to buy fresh produce—they are vibrant community hubs that strengthen local food systems, promote sustainability, and support small-scale farmers. Behind every successful market, there are dedicated individuals, farmers, and cities working tirelessly to make it thrive.
To recognize these key players, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the WordFMC Awards 2025, an international initiative celebrating excellence in farmers market leadership and innovation.
About the WordFMC Awards
The WordFMC Awards honor the outstanding contributions of those who make farmers markets flourish. Whether through innovative management, sustainable farming practices, or progressive policies, these awards shine a spotlight on those who help build stronger local food networks.
The competition is open to nominees in three categories:
Best Market Manager
This award recognizes a market manager who has demonstrated:
- Innovative strategies to improve market operations.
- Strong community engagement through events and initiatives.
- Support for families in need through market-driven programs.
- Efforts to expand farmers markets in urban areas.
PRIZE: A tablet + $1,000 to invest in farm management.
Best Farmer
This award honors a farmer who excels in:
- Promoting biodiversity and sustainable farming.
- Active participation and commitment to farmers markets.
- Business growth through market engagement.
- Introducing innovative products to enhance market offerings.
PRIZE: A tablet + $1,000 for biodiversity-related investments (e.g., seeds, plants).
Best City
This award acknowledges a city that:
- Implements policies that support farmers markets and local producers.
- Encourages market-friendly urban planning.
- Strengthens the connection between markets and the broader community.
PRIZE: Formal recognition for outstanding contributions to farmers market development.
How to Apply
Submissions will be accepted from March 12 to June 30, 2025. The application process is as follows:
- Member Associations must submit applications via our official online form.
- Choose the relevant category and complete all required questions.
- Associations can submit multiple applications in different categories.
- Once completed, submit the form before the deadline.
Each association can nominate more than one candidate across the three categories.
Evaluation & Award Ceremony
A panel of experts from the WordFMC will carefully review all applications. Three nominees will be selected for each category, and they will be invited to attend the Third General Assembly in October 2025, where the winners will be announced during an award ceremony.
Additionally, all nominees will have their travel expenses (hotel and flight) covered for the award ceremony.
