The vibrant city of Nairobi is about to witness the launch of its first-ever authentic farmers market, a groundbreaking milestone under the Mediterranean and African Markets Initiative (MAMI-Farmers Markets). This initiative, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and spearheaded by CIHEAM Bari in collaboration with the World Farmers Markets Coalition, is set to redefine the way local communities connect with their food sources. With invaluable support from the Italian Embassy in Nairobi and the Fondazione Campagna Amica, the market aims to strengthen the bridge between farmers and consumers, fostering sustainable agriculture and vibrant local economies.
A Vision for a Connected Mediterranean and Africa
The Farmers Market Nairobi marks the second successful project under MAMi, which envisions a network of farmers markets across the Mediterranean and Africa. Countries such as Tunisia, Lebanon, Kenya and Albania are central to this ambitious initiative, which seeks to empower farmers, promote sustainable practices, and bring communities closer together. By creating these hubs of local commerce, MAMi is driving significant social and economic benefits for smallholder farmers while introducing urban residents to fresh, high-quality, locally-sourced produce.
Empowering Farmers Through Training and Innovation
This transformative journey involved extensive groundwork, including training sessions for farmers and market managers facilitated by experts from the World Farmers Markets Coalition and CIHEAM Bari. From classroom education to on-field missions and legal support, these efforts culminated in the establishment of “Regional Coalition of Farmers Markets (RECOF),” a legal entity dedicated to fostering sustainable food systems. Over the coming years, this entity will spearhead efforts to ensure the market’s growth as a keystone of short supply chains and responsible consumerism.
A Market Rooted in Tradition and Innovation
Scheduled to open its doors on January 25th, the Farmers Market Nairobi will feature over 30 farmers proudly selling their products directly to consumers. Inspired by the successful model of Italy’s Fondazione Campagna Amica—Europe’s largest network of direct sales markets under a unified brand—this Kenyan market brings a fresh perspective to local food commerce. Consumers will not only enjoy access to premium-quality, locally-produced goods but also support a system that champions fair trade and environmental responsibility.
Building a Sustainable Future for Kenya’s Communities
At its core, the MAMi project is about more than just commerce. It is a testament to the power of international collaboration and sustainable development. By promoting direct access to quality local products, the Farmers Market Nairobi is setting the stage for healthier lifestyles, stronger rural economies, and a more resilient food system. With ongoing Italian support and a commitment to non-exploitative practices, the initiative aims to create lasting value for Kenyan communities.
