The countdown has begun! On January 25, 2025, Nairobi will officially welcome a farmers market unlike any other—a space where fresh, locally grown food meets the heart and soul of our farming community. The journey to create #FarmersMarketNairobi has been exciting, involving months of dedication, collaboration, and a vision to bring something truly unique to the community.
It all started over an idea one year ago in Rome, Italy. Since then, we’ve been meeting incredible farmers, working closely with local producers, and building connections to make this dream a reality. Every visit to a family farm, every conversation with a farmer, and every piece of input has shaped what this market will become.
Behind the Scenes: Stories from the Farm
This market isn’t just about food; it’s about people. People like James, a young farmer whose dedication to growing fresh, high-quality produce is truly inspiring. He’s one of the many incredible individuals bringing their hard work and passion to the market. Or Sam’s Farm, whose commitment to sustainable farming is setting the standard for local produce.
We’ve also met farmers who’ve returned to their roots in unique ways. Peter, an IT graduate, is now managing his family’s ancestral farm. Sam, a business finance expert, is teaching farming techniques on a small plot of land. And Mary, a marketing guru, is selling fresh Kienyeji chicken through Facebook. Their stories are just a glimpse of the talent, innovation, that will be at the heart of #FarmersMarketNairobi.
These are the people who will be filling the market with everything from herbs and honey to leafy greens and dried tomatoes. They’re not just growing food; they’re growing connections, building a community, and showing us all what sustainable farming can look like.
A New Kind of Market
This market isn’t just about buying and selling—it’s about celebrating the bond between farmers and the community. We’ve spent months carefully selecting the perfect space, bringing together passionate farmers, and designing an environment where people can come together to enjoy the best of what local farming has to offer.
Even CS Agriculture, Dr. Andrew Mwihia, is excited about this initiative. He’s been a strong supporter, emphasizing the importance of improving local production and celebrating the hard work of farmers. It’s encouraging to see leaders recognize the role markets like these can play in strengthening our food systems.
